Additional Information

Coir matting is a traditional and extremely effective type of barrier mat made from natural coconut fibres. They provide a very good level of dirt and moisture removal, making them suitable for indoor use or in a covered outdoor porch area that isn't exposed to the elements.

Available up to 200cm wide, our standard coir is 17mm thick for effective scraping properties. Priced per running metre with a maximum length of 1200cm, it is readily available to protect the entrance areas of homes and offices from unwanted debris and soiling. Coir matting, as well as being hardwearing, is easy to maintain and keep clean by simply vacuuming or lifting the mat and shaking the trapped dirt off.

*All of our coir products have a PVC backing*

Please note as this product is made using natural fibres some colour variation can occur – if you are unsure, please contact us for a sample. Products will be cut to our normal manufacturing tolerances.

Whilst coir is suitable for covered outdoor areas, it is not recommended for fully exposed outdoor areas where it may be constantly exposed to rain or direct sunlight. Extended exposure to moisture or UV rays can affect its longevity.

- Vacuum the mat regularly to remove debris that has been deposited on the mat.

- Shedding is normal in the initial month of use. During this period, simply brush or gently shake the mat.

- Avoid using chemicals to clean this product as it may stain the coconut fibres.

- If the mat becomes wet allow it to air/dry naturally.

Coir mats, made from the robust fibres of coconut husks, are an excellent choice for any entrance, effectively trapping dirt and dust. Known for their natural scraping ability, these mats help maintain cleanliness and reduce the ingress of debris into buildings. Our coir doormats come in a variety of colours—blue, green, red, grey, black, and more—allowing you to choose the most suitable mat that will complement your décor.

What to Expect from Our Coir Mat Range

When it comes to entrance matting, you can expect nothing but the best from our product range. Coir entrance mats, often referred to as coconut mats, are an exceptional choice to keep your entranceways dry, clean, and free from dirt and dust. They have gained popularity in both residential and commercial spaces due to their unmatched durability, organic aesthetics, and eco-friendly properties. Our coir products are thoughtfully manufactured from durable materials to provide our customers with a solution that is both functional and attractive. We understand the importance of having a reliable and effective matting solution, and that's why we have put great care into every detail of our matting products.

Coir matting is known for its exceptional ability to scrape dirt and absorb moisture, preventing dirt and debris from being tracked into your building. The natural coconut fibres used in coir mats are naturally coarse and provide excellent scraping qualities, ensuring dirt and moisture are effectively removed from footwear. Additionally, coir is absorbent, helping to minimise the spread of moisture and keeping your floors cleaner and safer.

To provide an extra level of protection against slip hazards, all of our coir products are backed in PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). The PVC backing serves as a barrier that prevents excess moisture from seeping through the mat and onto the floor. This feature is especially important in high-traffic areas or environments where spills and wet shoes are common. With our non-slip mats, you can have peace of mind knowing that everyone in your workplace is safe and secure.

Whilst PVC-backed mats offer excellent protection indoors, it's important to note that they are not suitable for outdoor use where they might get waterlogged.

Although natural coir has a classic, light brown appearance, we also offer an expanded palette of seven additional colours to cater to your interior design preferences. Our coir mats are available in shades like blue, green, red, grey, black, and more, providing you with a broad range of options to match any setting.

Benefits of Coir Mats

Coir matting is not only practical but also eco-friendly. They are produced from renewable resources, making them a superb choice for environmentally conscious users. Here are more reasons to choose our coconut mats:

Durability

One of the key advantages of coir lies in its remarkable durability. The outer shell of a coconut contains a high amount of lignin, which is an organic polymer found in many plants to increase their lifespan and strength. As a result of this component, the fibres are inherently strong and resilient, being able to withstand heavy usage. They are also resistant to water, rot, and mildew, ensuring that they are long-lasting. The combination of natural fibre strength, resistance to moisture and wear, make coconut mats a highly durable flooring option for both residential and commercial settings. They are an attractive option for a range of individuals and businesses because of their high performance.

Eco-Friendly

They are a natural and eco-friendly option and are perfect for companies wanting to invest in greener alternatives. Environmentally aware companies opt for this type of mat as it is made from coconut husk which is sustainably sourced and 100% biodegradable. The production process is also relatively low impact, with no harsh chemicals or dyes used. If any coir is leftover in the production of the mat, the waste will be used for different purposes, making the manufacturing process sustainable from start to finish. For example, the longer bristles that are not used are commonly used in the agricultural industry to protect vegetation and stabilise soil - this makes coir an almost zero-waste product!

Low Maintenance

Coir is easy to clean and maintain, regular vacuuming or a simple shake outside is usually sufficient to remove loose particles from the surface. In case of spills or stains, a gentle spot cleaning with mild soap and water will do the trick. However, it is essential to avoid excessive moisture, as prolonged exposure to water may affect the longevity of the mats. They are a fantastic choice for businesses that want to keep their flooring looking its best with minimal effort.

Customisable

These mats are available in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and colours, allowing you to find the perfect fit for your personal design preferences and business requirements. Coir door mats can be used in a range of indoor settings such as schools, public buildings, offices, and even in your home.

Cost-Effective

Coir mats are one of the most affordable entrance matting options and they are also easy to install. There is no need to employ specialist tools or hire fitting providers, you can simply cut it yourself with everyday tools such as a sharp Stanley knife and ruler. Coir can easily be trimmed to any size, so you can fit it flush within a mat well or lay it loosely on the floor. For those who would like more help, we offer a made-to-measure service where you can acquire a mat trimmed to an exact fit. Our service will save you both time and money, so please feel free to enquire today!

Choosing the Right Coir Mat

When selecting a Coir Mat for your entrance, it's essential to consider factors such as intended use, foot traffic, and the size of the entrance area. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Thickness and Density

For high-traffic areas, opting for thicker and denser Coir Mats is recommended. These mats offer enhanced durability and are better equipped to handle heavy foot traffic without wearing down quickly. Thicker mats also provide additional cushioning and comfort, making them a preferred choice for areas where individuals may stand for longer periods.

Size and Coverage

The size of the entrance and the coverage required are crucial considerations. It's important to choose a Coir Mat that adequately covers the entrance area to ensure maximum effectiveness in trapping dirt and moisture. Opting for a larger mat is beneficial, as it provides a wider surface for individuals to walk on, reducing the chances of dirt being tracked inside.

Customisation Options

Coir Mats can be customised to meet your specific requirements. You can choose to add personalized messages, logos, or artwork to create a unique and branded entrance experience. Customised mats not only serve their functional purpose but also become an extension of your brand identity, leaving a lasting impression on visitors and customers.

Coir Mats offer a myriad of benefits that make them the perfect solution for durable entrance flooring. Their natural, eco-friendly composition, unparalleled durability, and efficient dirt and moisture trapping capabilities set them apart from other flooring options. Whether you're looking to enhance the entrance of your home, business, or commercial space, Coir Mats provide a versatile and aesthetically pleasing choice.

Investing in Coir Mats demonstrates your commitment to sustainability while elevating the visual appeal of your entrances. Their cost-effectiveness, easy maintenance, and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic make them a wise long-term investment.

Coir mats have grown to be a very popular choice for indoor use, due to their natural qualities and excellent scraping properties. The outer shell of a coconut contains a high amount of lignin, which is an organic polymer found in many plants to increase their lifespan and strength. As a result of this component, the coconut bristles are incredibly tough and durable, as well as water-resistant.

The rough nature of the bristles and the woven design means it is difficult for dirt, dust, and debris to penetrate beneath the surface of the mat, which means it can easily be maintained and cleaned. Dried dirt and mud can easily be shaken off, making them a low-maintenance and cost-effective solution, and therefore ideal for busy businesses and environments.  Overall, these components make coir mats some of the most reliable floor coverings on the market today.

The natural formation of the coconut bristles means they are 100% biodegradable and sustainable. This makes a coconut mat an excellent option for those who are more environmentally mindful.

Coir mats also have the unique ability to resist moisture, which helps keep your floors dry even after heavy rain or snowfall. Overall, they are an ideal choice for anyone looking for an attractive yet functional entrance mat that is both durable and easy to clean.

This natural material is suitable for heavy foot traffic areas such as schools, universities, and public buildings that need protection. The production of coir mats does not require the use of non-renewable resources, and it does not contribute to deforestation or other harmful environmental practices.

Low Environmental Impact: The production of coir mats has a low environmental impact compared to other types of flooring. Coir mats are typically produced using low-energy production methods, and the waste materials generated during production can be used for other purposes, such as fertiliser.

Effective at Trapping Dirt and Moisture: Coir mats are highly effective at trapping dirt and moisture, which can help to reduce the amount of energy needed to clean floors and carpets. Coir Mats - Dirt and Moisture Removal

Coir mats have a very coarse texture, which effectively removes and scrapes excess dirt and moisture from the soles of shoes. The safety of your staff and visitors is always a top priority, and coir mats enable you to keep everyone safe by reducing slip and trip hazards in the workplace. When coir mats are used in areas of heavy foot traffic, they successfully collect dirt and debris before it is tracked further into your building, and the natural absorption properties of the fibres help keep water away. To further reduce slip risks, every coir mat we manufacture is backed with PVC to prevent water from seeping onto the floor. Not only does the PVC retain surplus water, but it also provides added grip to the base of the coir mat, which stops it from sliding and shifting across smooth floor surfaces when people walk through.

For locations that have a lot of wheeled equipment passing through, such as prams and wheelchairs, we offer coir mats with a gradient rubber edge. Although the rubber edge makes it easier for wheels to roll over, it also prevents trip accidents from occurring in the workplace. Especially if your coir mat is not being placed in a mat well or recess, the sloped edge reduces the number of lips in the matting which may cause people to trip.

How Thick Should My Coir Entrance Mat Be?

Coir entrance mats are a popular choice for many homeowners and businesses due to their durability, natural look, and ability to effectively trap dirt and moisture. One question that often arises when choosing a coir entrance mat is how thick it should be.

The thickness of a coir mat can vary depending on the manufacturer and the intended use of the mat. In general, coir mats range from 1/2 inch to 1 inch in thickness.

Different entranceways will experience different levels of foot traffic, where some areas will need more protection than others. Typically, traditional coir mats are 17mm thick, however, we also stock 14mm, 23mm, and 28mm depths on our website too. If you require additional longevity, we suggest choosing a thicker mat.

A thicker entrance mat may provide more cushioning and comfort underfoot, which can be beneficial for areas with heavy foot traffic or for people who spend a lot of time standing on the mat. Additionally, a thicker mat may be more effective at trapping dirt and moisture.

However, a thicker coir mat may also be more difficult to clean and maintain, as it can be heavier and more cumbersome to move. It may also be more expensive than a thinner mat.

On the other hand, a thinner coir mat may be easier to clean and maintain, as it is lighter and more manageable. It may also be less expensive than a thicker mat.

When choosing the thickness of a coir mat, it is important to consider the intended use of the mat and the amount of foot traffic it will receive. In general, a thicker mat may be more appropriate for high-traffic areas, while a thinner mat may be suitable for lower-traffic areas.

It is also important to consider the location and size of the entrance where the mat will be placed. A larger entrance may require a thicker mat to ensure that it covers the entire area effectively.

In summary, the thickness of a coir mat can vary depending on the manufacturer and the intended use of the mat. A thicker mat may provide more cushioning and be more effective at trapping dirt and moisture but may be more difficult to clean and maintain. A thinner mat may be easier to manage and less expensive but may be less effective in high-traffic areas. When choosing a coir mat, it is important to consider the intended use and location of the mat to determine the appropriate thickness.

Do Coir Mats Shed?

Coir, which is made from the fibres of coconut husks, is a popular material for a variety of products, including mats, rugs, and brushes. One concern that many people have when it comes to coir products is whether or not they shed.

The short answer is that yes, coir mats can shed to some extent, particularly when they are new. This is because the fibres of coir are not tightly woven or bound together like some other materials, such as wool or cotton. As a result, some shedding is normal and should be expected.

However, the amount of shedding can vary depending on a number of factors, including the quality of the coir, the manufacturing process, and the intended use of the product. In general, higher-quality coir that has been properly processed and woven is less likely to shed than lower-quality coir.

Additionally, the way in which coir matting products are used can also impact shedding. For example, a coir rug placed in a high-traffic area may shed more than one placed in a low-traffic area. Similarly, a coir brush that is used frequently may shed more than one that is used infrequently.

That being said, shedding should not be excessive or continue for an extended period of time. If shedding persists even after the coir product has been used and cleaned several times, it may be a sign of poor quality or improper processing.

To minimise shedding, it is important to properly care for your coir mat. This can include regular cleaning, gentle handling, and avoiding exposure to excessive moisture or humidity. It is also recommended to shake out new coir products before use to remove any loose fibres.

In summary, coir mats can shed to some extent, particularly when they are new. The amount of shedding can vary depending on the quality of the coir, the manufacturing process, and the intended use of the product. However, shedding should not be excessive or continue for an extended period of time. Proper care and handling can help minimise shedding and extend the life of coir products.

How Long Does a Coir Mat Last?

On average, coir mats can last anywhere from 5 to 7 years with proper care and maintenance. Factors that can affect the lifespan of a coir mat include the amount of foot traffic it receives, the frequency of cleaning, and the environment in which it is placed.

If the coir mat is placed in a high-traffic area, such as a busy commercial space or entrance to a home, it may experience more wear and tear than a mat placed in a low-traffic area. Similarly, if the coir mat is not regularly cleaned or maintained, it may become damaged or worn out more quickly.

The environment in which the coir mat is placed can also affect its lifespan. Coir mats that are placed in an area with high humidity or moisture may be more prone to mould or mildew, which can damage the fibres and reduce the lifespan of the mat.

To ensure that your coir mat lasts as long as possible, it is important to properly clean and maintain it. This can include regular vacuuming or sweeping to remove dirt and debris, as well as spot-cleaning any spills or stains as soon as they occur. It is also recommended to rotate the matting periodically to distribute wear and tear evenly across the fibres.

In summary, coir mats can last anywhere from 5 to 7 years with proper care and maintenance. Factors such as foot traffic, cleaning frequency, and environmental conditions can all affect the lifespan of the mat. To ensure that your coir mat lasts as long as possible, it is important to properly clean and maintain it.
