Here at Commercial Matting, this is a question we often get asked by our customers, so let us just briefly explain what it is.

Coir matting is sometimes also referred to as coconut matting, and this is simply because coir matting is made from 100% natural fibres from the husk of a coconut. These are the types of mats you are most likely to have at your front door or in the reception area of your office. They are brown, bristly, and great for removing larger deposits of dirt from shoes and boots.

They are also one of the most cost-effective forms of matting due to the abundance and lower cost of the main component, coconut husk.

Coir matting is also one of our most environmentally friendly products, because it is made entirely from the husk of a coconut.  It is completely biodegradable, and the fibres that are not used during the manufacturing process are often used for different purposes, resulting in less waste. We do not use longer bristle fibres in the production of coir matting, but they are often used in agriculture to stabilise soil, protect vegetation, and prevent erosion. This means that the fibres we do not use to manufacture the mat are being used in other processes and not being discarded.

A coir mat is most often used in building entrances, and you will often see it installed in wells or recesses in shops, hotels, and restaurants as you enter through the door. They are often the first choice for entranceway matting because it is both practical, low cost, durable, and effective at keeping the entrance clean.

Designed mainly as a dirt and dust collector, here at commercial matting, our commercial coir matting is ideal for all entrance types including hotels, schools, office buildings and public buildings, in fact all buildings that are likely to be subject to a lot of foot traffic, especially where prone to picking up a lot of dirt.

Whilst the base colour is a natural brown, coir matting can be coloured to create vibrant alternatives to the brown we are most accustomed to seeing. At Commercial Matting, we have mats available in 7 additional colours, black, blue, brown, green, grey, natural, red, russet and natural. All our commercial coir matting that is in stock here at Commercial Matting is also available in a range of different sizes as well as colours to ensure it matches perfectly with your interiors. If required, commercial coir matting can be fitted in a well in your property entranceway to lessen the risk of trips or to prevent it from slipping on a smooth floor.  Whatever size you need it to fit into, we can cut your commercial coir matting to the correct size.

As a rule, we do not recommend using PVC backed commercial coir matting in an outdoor setting where it could get very wet. The PVC backing prevents the water from running away and could cause the matting to become waterlogged and rot. If you need your coir matting for an outdoor setting, we can put holes in the backing to allow water to run away but we do not recommend this for the reasons above.
